Learning Disability Friendly
In October 2011 we were pleased to become the first practice in the area to be awarded the Learning Disability Friendly Award. As a practice we work hard to give excellent service to all of our practice population. We have found our extra efforts and adaptations for our patients with learning disabilities both rewarding and beneficial. The assessment visit was well organised and especially valuable for us as the assessing panel included two service users. This gave us the chance to get real patient involvement. Receiving this award reflects our dedication towards providing quality healthcare to meet our patients’ needs.
This means we;
• Offer annual health checks for people with learning disabilities
• Have easy to access, bright and welcoming premises
• Issue and use Health Action Plans and VIP cards
• Offer tours of the surgery for people with learning disabilities to lessen fear
• Use communication aids to help understanding
• Allow double appointment booking for people with learning disabilities if needed
• Have staff who are trained in customer care and learning disability awareness
• Have a learning disability champion
• Have evidence that we share good practice
• Have good examples of where we have actively supported someone with a learning disability or their carers
