Antibiotic Guardian

Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats facing us today

Why it is relevant to you: Without effective antibiotics many routine treatments will become increasingly dangerous. Setting broken bones, basic operations, even chemotherapy and animal health all rely on access to antibiotics that work.

What we want you to do: To slow resistance we need to cut the unnecessary use of antibiotics. We invite the public, students and educators, farmers, the veterinary and medical communities and professional organisations, to become Antibiotic Guardians.

When your GP advises that antibiotics won't help your symptoms, it's not because they want you to suffer. It's because they won't help and overuse of these vital medicines can mean they wont work when you actually do need them. Like you, we don't want these lifesaving medications to become obselete, and if your condition indicates that they are needed, then they will be prescribed for you.

It's time for us to take antibiotic resistance seriously

Help us keep antibiotics working...

Imagine a world where antibiotics don’t work

In 30 years this could be our reality. Simple infections that we can treat right now could become deadly. Antibiotic resistance is a real health emergency and is becoming the biggest threat to health worldwide.
It’s time to take antibiotic resistance seriously. Let’s keep antibiotics working for everyone.

What are antibiotics?

Antibiotics are used to treat serious bacterial infections. They kill bacteria or prevent them from spreading. But they do not work for everything. Many mild infections, including those that aren’t caused by bacteria, can get better on their own without antibiotics.

What is antibiotic resistance?

This is when germs like bacteria can defeat the antibiotics designed to kill them. The overuse of antibiotics has made them less effective and has led to the emergence of “superbugs”.

What can we do about it?
