Pharmacy First
Pharmacy First: Fast treatment for minor ailments
Since February 2024, the new Pharmacy First service has been in place. Under this scheme Pharmacists can diagnose and treat minor conditions without the need to visit your GP. This service is perfect for:
- Sore throats
- Sinusitis
- Coughs and colds
- Impetigo
- Shingles
- Earaches
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women aged 16 to 64 years
- Infected insect bites
Pharmacists can recommend over-the-counter remedies or issue medications including antibiotics when appropriate, saving you time and getting you back on track quickly.
If our signposting team direct you to the pharmacy, they are not trying to fob you off! This service is provided by the NHS to help you get the treatment you need sooner and even when your surgery is closed.
Not all Pharmacies offer Pharmacy First service but most do. Ask your pharmacy team about Pharmacy First.
Free NHS contraception services
Many pharmacies offer free NHS contraception services, giving you convenient access to birth control. You can often get a consultation and treatment without needing an appointment, and private consultation rooms ensure privacy.
